Modifying Crank baits To Improve Success
By Charles Graves
Jun 7, 2006, 19:15

1. You can increase the speed with which a crank bait reaches it maximum depth by taking a file and Filing the underside of the front edge of the bill down to a sharp edge. This cuts through the water column faster and gets it deeper faster.

2. You can make a coffin billed bait by taking a file and filing the front edge and the corners of the bill to a coffin shape. The advantage to this is that coffin billed baits deflect off cover a little better than rounded bills.
you can also do this to create a square billed diver.

3. Replace the front treble hook with a Daiichi Bleeding Bait Treble of the same size. his will increase hookups by as much as 50% because in my Experience The fish actually target the red front hook and the rear hook grabs them to hold them more securely.

4. Take a permanent Sharpie and write the diving depth on the bottom of the bill. No ,ore trying to remember or guessing what depth it runs.

5. Mark a dot on the bottom of the baits that have caught you fish, then you will not fish the ones that do not produce.

6. Use a paint pen to add bleeding effects to a crankbait. This will give the bait an injured look and may trigger more strikes.

7. Replace the rear treble of a crank bait with a treble with a trailer(feather, hair, etc). adds a different look to the bait. Works best on plastics, as this change can throw off the delicate balance of wooden lures.

8. Use a oval split ring for the tie ring. it gives the bait a better action, and you will not tie off in the split as often.

9. Never tie directly to the eye of a crank bait. always use a split ring or snap. this allows free movement of the bait.

10. There are times when bass want a bait that suspends.to make a floating crank bait suspend, I use suspend dots. You can also wrap lead wire around the hook shank to achieve this, but this is not as easy as the dots.

11. This is maybe the most important tip I can give you, but it is not how to modify them, just a useful tip. The BIGGEST mistake a person can make with a crank bait is NOT throwing them. There is much more to cranking than simply chunking and winding.Throw one every chance you get. the rewards can be worth it.

Good Fishing
