Putting a Season in Perspective

This past season has not been one that I am particularly proud of, at least not in the BFL, with only one finish in the money. If it weren’t for local tournaments the season would have put me in the poor house. I set a goal for the season to finish in the top 40 and be eligible to fish the Stren Series tournaments in 2007. At some point along the way I forgot just what my goals were. I thought the season was a total washout especially with the poor performance I had at the Regional

Championship.   It wasn’t until loading the boat on the final day that things came into focus, and I can’t take the credit for that. See, my wife had been telling me all season long you’re reaching your goal and I kind of just set that aside because she is my wife and she will be that way because she has to.   I ran into Elite Series Pro John Crews and we talked for a while about things and it was his words, “at least you made it here” that had put my wife’s argument into a new light. Once you lose sight of what your doing or what you set out to do, take a moment and talk with those who know you best. They will be honest and give you an outside perspective on things.   So all things aside, I did what I set out to do and now feel a little better about the season.   But these questions still linger.   Is it wrong for me not to be satisfied?   Is that continual need for improvement a hunger that all fishermen feel?   Is it that dissatisfaction with our performances that will drive us to the next level of competition?   I don’t have all the answers, but I do know this, a person has to set achievable goals and can’t lose focus of those goals and have all the confidence to achieve them.
